Inside Waddington’s: Canada’s Premier Auction House

A Lake Superior canvas by Lawren Harris heads up the major Inuit Art sale alongside a captivating composition by Yves Gaucher, Bonne fete, and Raga, a striking work that demonstrates the graphic skill of this pioneering hard-edge painter. Inspired by music, he mastered the optical potential of juxtaposed colours and ambient lighting in his compositions, which are often imbued with a sense of movement.

While many people like to whine about Waddington s being a laundering front and whatnot, there are undeniably gems and bargains to be found here… IF YOU KNOW WHAT YOU’RE LOOKING FOR. For example, a few months ago, I was able to scoop up an incredibly rare Macallan ’56 in the auction for the charity Grapes for Humanity for just $3,500. Not a bad deal considering I have seen them sell for upwards of $10,000 at other auction houses.
