From Ubisoft’s NEO to GoodAI’s AI People, a new generation of AI-based games showcase the promise and peril of the technology. However, there are still a number of challenges to overcome. In order for a character to engage in conversation with the player and appear realistic, they must be able to recognise their surroundings. This is an extremely difficult task for a computer to achieve.

Despite being programmed to respond to certain commands, it’s still not easy for an AI to understand exactly what the player is trying to say. It’s not unusual for an NPC to reply to a player request with a completely irrelevant response. It’s also a challenge for the AI to know when to stop talking.

Xalavier Nelson Jr, co-founder of independent developer Strange Scaffold, agrees that although generative AI can produce some incredible storylines, it will never be able to replace humans in terms of creating high-concept narratives that capture the imagination. “For me, the best part of a game is the interaction between characters and that comes from the mind of a writer,” he says.
