But dozens of exemptions have been handed out to people near the end of life, and health practitioners can apply for approval from Health Canada to use them in psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy.

The fungus can be found in the temperate rainforests on the west coast of Canada and around the Great Lakes. The federal government is focusing on developing ways to grow it legally, including for medicinal and research purposes.
The legalization of psilocybin will probably come from extensive medical application and widespread social acceptance, McGill University law professor Daniel Weinstock says. The emergence of illegal stores could slow that process, however. And the legalization of psychedelics will likely take longer than people expect, he adds. This is because the drugs are incredibly difficult to regulate. He compares it to the long journey toward legalization of cannabis, which took decades because of a combination of political, economic and cultural factors.
